82-880: Social and Cognitive Aspects of Bilingualism
This seminar will examine the differential course and consequences of learning two languages for individuals who study a second or foreign language in a formal classroom setting and for others who have an opportunity or need to acquire a second language in a non-formal setting. With the changing demography of the American population, and the increasing internationalization of markets, more and more students and adult learners will be seeking ways to develop foreign language skills. In addition, we will examine the ways in which a variety of affective, cognitive, and personal factors influence the process of learning. The implications of these findings for the formulation of educational policy for the United States will be discussed.
