No cultural experience reveals more about the deepest understructures of a culture than death. This course, spanning the colonial era to the present, will examine the sickness and the body, perceptions of passing, rituals surrounding loss, the memorialization of lives, as well as diverse forms of grieving. Primary documents, novels, material culture, and historical monographs will provide a wide variety of texts concerning the ways in which America deals with death.
