The Storefront Project relocates each year into a different vacant storefront or unused space in the city of Pittsburgh. Students in this class use the storefront to present projects that have a catalytic relationship to surrounding social, physical and economic context. For Spring 09, the Storefront Project will remain in its current location at 124 South Highland and Baum (next to the Shadow Lounge) in East Liberty. We will be expanding on a project initiated in the fall ¿an unusual late-night waffle emporium that doubles as a set for a weekly reality television show. Each week we will use the waffle shop¿s open hours to document the stories and lives of the employees (students) and the customers (community members). These recordings are produced into weekly episodes played in the windows of the storefront, on cable access TV and through our own podcasts. Students are involved in all aspects of the operation including running the waffle shop; filming, editing and producing the videos; promotion and advertising; as well as designing all collateral materials and merchandise. Although we have a basic framework, the specific directions of the project next semester will depend on the new ideas and energy you bring.¿The class is open to students from all schools, and particularly encourages students from Drama, Design, Architecture, Art and the Humanities.¿More info at http://www.tentshow.org
