This course provides a rigorous, quantitative introduction to the microphysics, chemistry, thermodynamics, and optics of atmospheric particles. Topics to be covered include single particle dynamics, condensational and coagulational growth processes, solution of the general dynamic equation, formation of secondary aerosols via gas-phase and aqueous chemistry, phase partitioning in the inorganic sulfate-nitrate-ammonium system, absorptive partitioning theory of organic aerosols, water uptake, aerosol-cloud interactions, Kohler theory (activation), Mie scattering, visibility, and climate and health effects of atmospheric aerosols.Prerequisites: 12-751 or equivalent or permission of the instructor
